Spartanburg, S.C. – Afternoon thunderstorms are set to impact Upstate South Carolina and western North Carolina today, with the potential for damaging winds, heavy rain, and frequent lightning as a cold front moves through.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, storms will become more widespread by late afternoon and evening, with the strongest cells capable of producing brief damaging wind gusts and large hail, particularly across the Piedmont region. Some neighborhoods could also see localized flooding where rainfall is heaviest.

Drivers along I-85, U.S. 29, and local mountain routes in Greenville, Spartanburg, and Henderson counties should plan for rapidly changing road conditions and low visibility. Residents are urged to stay indoors during storms, avoid flooded intersections, and keep devices charged in case of power outages.

The threat will diminish overnight as storms move east, leaving behind patchy fog into Sunday morning. The weather pattern then turns calmer, with mostly sunny skies and seasonable temperatures expected for the workweek.

More updates are possible if additional severe thunderstorm advisories are issued through the evening.
