Greenville, S.C. – A stretch of slightly cooler air is settling over the western Carolinas this Sunday, bringing scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms, mainly in the mountains and nearby foothills. Highs will run below seasonal averages, keeping the day more comfortable than recent afternoons.
According to the National Weather Service office in Greenville-Spartanburg, most thunderstorm activity will remain confined to higher elevations in North Carolina and adjacent South Carolina foothills, with only isolated cells developing elsewhere. Any storms that do form are expected to remain weak and non-severe.
Communities such as Asheville, Hendersonville, and Boone in North Carolina, as well as Greenville and Spartanburg in South Carolina, could see brief downpours this afternoon and evening. Drivers on I-26 and I-85 should stay alert for quick changes in visibility where showers move through.
While no widespread severe weather is expected, outdoor plans in the mountains may be briefly interrupted by lightning and pockets of heavier rain. Residents are encouraged to move indoors when thunder is heard and to check radar frequently for pop-up activity.
This cooler pattern is expected to linger into early next week, with chances for additional scattered showers.
