Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina – Travel conditions remain hazardous across the Upstate Monday morning as lingering sleet and ice continue to impact untreated roads, according to the National Weather Service.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through 1 p.m. Monday, even though sleet and freezing rain have ended. Forecasters say secondary and untreated roads are still treacherous, particularly during the early morning hours.

Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing by late morning to early afternoon, with clearing skies helping melt ice on road surfaces. Improvement is expected through the afternoon as sunshine and warmer temperatures work to reduce icy conditions.

However, officials caution that black ice may redevelop in spots tonight, especially in areas where melting occurs during the day and temperatures fall back below freezing after sunset. Lingering moisture from sleet and freezing rain could refreeze quickly during the evening and overnight hours.

Drivers are urged to use caution this morning, especially on bridges, overpasses, and less-traveled roads. Extra care is advised for the morning commute until temperatures climb safely above freezing.

The National Weather Service notes that while conditions will improve today, winter travel hazards may not fully end until all ice has melted and temperatures remain above freezing overnight.
