Greenville, South Carolina – A Winter Storm Warning is in effect across the entire Greenville–Spartanburg forecast area as a significant winter storm is expected to bring widespread accumulating snow, creating hazardous travel conditions across the southern Appalachians, Upstate South Carolina, and western North Carolina.
According to the National Weather Service Greenville–Spartanburg, the warning is valid from 4 p.m. Friday through 7 a.m. Sunday. Snow is expected to begin over the mountains Friday afternoon, then spread east across the Piedmont Friday evening and overnight. Periods of moderate to heavy snow are possible, with locally higher totals within focused snow bands.
Forecast guidance indicates most locations will receive between 4 and 8 inches of snow, with higher elevations and favored banding areas potentially exceeding those amounts. Probabilistic outlooks show a 90% chance that snowfall will exceed low-end projections, underscoring confidence in impactful winter weather. Even at the lower end, snow totals are sufficient to cause major travel disruptions.
Road conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly, especially along major corridors including Interstate 85, Interstate 26, Interstate 40, Interstate 77, and U.S. Highway 74. Snow-covered roads, reduced visibility, and slick bridges are likely Friday night into Saturday, making travel dangerous or impossible at times.
Snow is forecast to taper off from west to east late Saturday night, ending early Sunday morning. Very cold temperatures following the storm may allow ice to persist on untreated roads, prolonging impacts into Sunday.
Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, prepare for possible power outages, and ensure vehicles are equipped for winter conditions if travel is unavoidable. Those in higher elevations should be prepared for prolonged snow cover.
The National Weather Service emphasizes that conditions may change quickly as snow bands develop. Residents should closely monitor official forecasts, warnings, and local emergency guidance throughout the event.
