Greenville, South Carolina – A weekend rain system could bring up to 1.5 inches across the western Carolinas.
According to the US National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, beneficial rainfall is expected from early Sunday morning through Sunday evening across western North Carolina, Upstate South Carolina, and northeast Georgia.
Forecast storm totals generally range from 1 to 1.5 inches across much of the region, including Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Hickory, and Charlotte. Higher elevations near Asheville and Burnsville are forecast to receive between 0.5 and 1 inch.
Officials said the rainfall may provide some relief to ongoing drought conditions, though it is not expected to fully eliminate deficits. The steady precipitation pattern is expected to unfold in waves throughout the day Sunday rather than as one continuous downpour.
Drivers along Interstate 85, Interstate 26, and Interstate 40 may encounter wet pavement and reduced visibility during periods of heavier rain. Ponding in low-lying areas and slower travel times are possible, particularly during peak Sunday travel hours.
Weekend travelers, service workers, and students returning to campuses may experience minor delays depending on rainfall intensity.
The weather service has not indicated severe weather with this system but advises residents to monitor updates for any forecast adjustments. Rainfall totals may vary by location depending on storm track and localized heavier bands.
Conditions are expected to taper off by Sunday evening, with drier weather gradually returning early next week.
