Greenville, North Carolina – A coastal low and advancing cold front will bring a quick change in conditions across eastern North Carolina today, starting with light rain and ending with sharply colder air and a brief chance for wintry weather by early Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service office in Newport/Morehead City, light rain is expected this afternoon and evening across Pitt County and surrounding areas, with temperatures climbing into the upper 50s before falling overnight. As the cold front moves through late tonight into Thursday morning, rain may briefly mix with snowflakes in inland locations, including Greenville, before precipitation ends.

No accumulation is expected, but the timing near daybreak could create isolated slick spots, especially on bridges and elevated roadways as temperatures fall quickly. By Thursday morning, lows are expected to drop into the mid-teens inland, with highs only reaching the lower 40s during the afternoon.

Behind the front, conditions turn dry but much colder and breezy. Friday morning temperatures across eastern North Carolina are expected to bottom out in the teens to lower 20s, while coastal areas remain slightly warmer. Sunshine will return Friday, but the cold air will linger, making it feel colder during the morning commute and early outdoor activities.

At the coast, beach communities will see rain today with highs in the lower 60s, followed by cooler and breezy conditions Thursday and Friday. Another potential coastal system is being monitored for Sunday, which could bring additional impacts to eastern North Carolina if it develops.

Residents are encouraged to plan for rapidly changing weather, dress in layers, and protect pets, plants, and exposed pipes ahead of the coldest temperatures late this week. Additional updates may be issued as forecasters continue to monitor both the cold air and the potential system later this weekend.
