Greenville, SC – A Greenville County man has been sentenced to nearly three decades in prison following a 2020 fatal shooting, according to court officials.

Thirteenth Circuit Solicitor Cindy Crick announced that on September 11, 2025, Rashad Jamon Stovall, 44, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. Circuit Judge Perry H. Gravely sentenced him to 28 years in the South Carolina Department of Corrections.

According to prosecutors, the case stemmed from the January 16, 2020, death of Lamonte Simmons Jr., who was found fatally shot in a grassy area outside his grandmother’s apartment in Greenville County. Investigators said phone records revealed that Stovall had been driving to multiple locations searching for Simmons in the hours before the shooting.

Evidence presented during the plea hearing included text messages between Stovall and Simmons, surveillance video showing a vehicle registered to Stovall arriving at the apartment complex, and shell casings recovered in the parking area. Prosecutors also noted that Stovall’s phone, still attached to a charging cable, was found among the casings. Forensic testing linked Stovall’s fingerprints to both his phone and the inside of the vehicle.

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit, including investigators Tracey King and Adam Hughey, led the investigation.
