Greenville, SC – Heavy rain moving through the mountains of western North Carolina and upstate South Carolina could trigger flash flooding and landslides overnight, with up to 4 inches of rainfall expected by Tuesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, a Flood Watch remains in effect until 8 a.m. Tuesday for mountain counties across both states, including Henderson, Transylvania, and Avery in North Carolina, and the higher elevations of Greenville and Pickens counties in South Carolina. The slow-moving storm system is expected to deliver several rounds of moderate to heavy rain through the night.

Localized rainfall totals may exceed 4 inches along east- and south-facing ridges, particularly in areas like Brevard, Hendersonville, and Rutherfordton. Lower elevation communities, including Lenoir and Marion, could still receive 1 to 2 inches, which may lead to flooding in low-lying or poor drainage areas. Officials warn that runoff could rapidly swell rivers and creeks, especially near the Blue Ridge Escarpment.

Those living near mountain slopes or in valleys are urged to prepare for potential landslides or rockslides, particularly in areas recently affected by heavy rain. Emergency managers recommend avoiding travel on mountain roads during downpours and staying alert for changing conditions.

The Flood Watch remains in effect until 8 a.m. Tuesday, and additional warnings may be issued if rainfall intensifies overnight.
