Springfield, Missouri – A line of strong to severe thunderstorms could move across southwest Missouri Sunday afternoon, bringing damaging wind risks and a small chance of brief tornadoes.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, storms are expected to develop along a cold front and move through the region between roughly 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday.

Forecasters say the primary hazard will likely be damaging straight-line winds, with potential gusts reaching 60 to 70 mph in stronger storms. The storm line may also produce isolated “spin-up” tornadoes embedded within the line, though the tornado risk is described as relatively low.

The highest potential for severe weather is expected east of Highway 65, which includes communities stretching from Springfield toward West Plains and south-central Missouri.

Weather officials emphasize that conditions could change as the system develops. Residents are encouraged to remain weather aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings, including weather alerts on mobile devices or NOAA Weather Radio.

The National Weather Service also advised residents to continue monitoring updated forecasts as the cold front approaches and storm timing becomes clearer.

Sunday’s storms may affect afternoon travel, outdoor plans, and weekend events across southwest Missouri, particularly during peak afternoon hours.

For younger residents, students, and workers traveling across the region, the storm timing could coincide with afternoon commutes and weekend activities.
