Burlington, Vt. – Snow will begin impacting roads across Vermont before midnight, with the heaviest bursts expected between midnight and 9 a.m. Sunday, creating hazardous travel for early drivers.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, precipitation will spread west to east late tonight, quickly becoming widespread snow across the entire state. Snowfall rates during the overnight hours could reduce visibility to under one mile, especially along I-89, Route 7, and mountain passes through the Green Mountains.

Cities including Burlington, Montpelier, St. Albans, and Rutland will see steady snow through Sunday morning before a shift begins in the afternoon. Warmer air moving in will change snow to a rain and wintry mix in lower elevations, followed by drizzle and pockets of freezing drizzle late Sunday afternoon into the evening.

Higher elevations such as Stowe and areas near Mount Mansfield are more likely to hold onto snow longer, while valley locations face a higher risk of icy road surfaces as temperatures hover near freezing.

Drivers should plan for slower travel, keep headlights on, and avoid sudden braking as conditions deteriorate. Snow and ice impacts will continue into Sunday night, with lingering slick spots possible into early Monday as the system tapers off.
