Wisconsin – Tire spray hisses on wet pavement early this morning, but conditions are set to change fast as a wintry system moves in from the west. By later today, post-Christmas travel across northeast Wisconsin faces a growing Winter Weather threat that may worsen quickly after dark.

According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, light snow spreads into north-central Wisconsin this afternoon, reaching the Green Bay area by evening. As temperatures hover near freezing, precipitation transitions into a widespread mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain overnight. Northern counties are more likely to see snow, while areas farther south trend wetter.

The most hazardous period arrives Friday morning. Freezing rain becomes more widespread, with most locations expected to see up to a tenth of an inch of ice. Locally higher amounts are possible along and north of Highway 29, where transitions between snow and rain favor ice buildup. Untreated roads may turn slick quickly.

Travel impacts could be significant. Slippery surfaces are likely on I-41, Highway 29, and rural county roads. Visibility may drop during heavier bursts, and braking distances increase on icy pavement. Drivers should slow down, leave extra space, and plan for delays during early-morning travel.

Minor tree damage and isolated power outages are possible as ice coats branches and lines. While widespread outages are not expected, gusty conditions may stress already weighted trees. Secure travel plans now and charge devices ahead of time.

Conditions gradually improve by Friday afternoon as precipitation tapers and transitions back to rain from south to north. Even then, cold ground temperatures may allow slick spots to linger, especially in shaded or less-traveled areas.

Looking ahead, this system marks a reminder that winter travel risks remain elevated heading into the weekend. Meteorologists continue to track small shifts in temperature that could change impacts quickly. Stay alert for updated advisories, and check road conditions before heading out.
