Green Bay, Wisconsin – Drivers across northeast Wisconsin are facing a hazardous start to the day as black ice and freezing fog combine to create slick, hard-to-detect travel conditions that could last well into the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, untreated roads, sidewalks, and parking lots are icy this morning and may remain slick through much of today as temperatures hover near freezing. Areas of fog and freezing fog are also expected during the morning hours, further reducing visibility and increasing the risk of sudden slick spots, especially on bridges and overpasses.
Communities including Green Bay, Appleton, Oshkosh, Marinette, Sturgeon Bay, and surrounding rural areas may see the worst impacts where pavement temperatures remain cold. Even treated roads could refreeze at times, making black ice difficult to spot. Highs today are expected to range from the mid-30s to near 40, limiting melting in shaded or low-traffic areas.
Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking. Pedestrians should use caution on sidewalks and parking lots, where icy patches may be hidden beneath a thin layer of moisture. Fog conditions may gradually improve this afternoon, but slick spots could persist.
Officials stress that travel conditions can change quickly, and extra caution is advised throughout the day. Additional advisories are possible if freezing fog lingers longer than expected.
