Green Bay, Wisconsin –
Damaging thunderstorms are set to sweep across northwest and north-central Wisconsin Tuesday afternoon, threatening areas from Ashland to Green Bay with powerful winds, hail, and heavy rain between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.
According to the US National Weather Service in Green Bay, a broken line of strong to severe storms will develop first in northwest Wisconsin and march southeastward through the evening hours. Meteorologists warn that the greatest risk for damaging winds—gusts up to 60 mph—and quarter-sized hail will focus on north-central communities like Wausau, Rhinelander, and Antigo before storms weaken farther south and east.
Travel on Highways 51, 8, and 29 could be hazardous, especially during the evening commute. Downed branches, isolated power outages, and localized flash flooding are possible where the strongest storms hit. Residents in Marathon, Vilas, and Oneida counties are urged to stay indoors if warnings are issued, secure outdoor items, and avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather. Keep devices charged in case of outages.
This is the region’s first widespread severe storm event of July, echoing similar mid-summer outbreaks in 2021 and 2019. Storms should exit most of Wisconsin by late evening, but additional advisories could follow if new threats develop.
Warnings remain in effect for north-central Wisconsin through Tuesday night.
