Green Bay, Wisconsin – A strong winter system is expected to bring multiple weather hazards to northeast Wisconsin from tonight through Thursday night, with dangerous travel conditions possible.

According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, the first round of wintry weather will arrive tonight in the form of freezing rain and a wintry mix. Icy spots are most likely overnight, especially across north-central Wisconsin, the Fox Valley, and areas near Lake Michigan, where some locations may briefly remain above freezing.

By Thursday afternoon, a second round of precipitation is expected as rain transitions to snow while temperatures fall rapidly. Forecasters warn this temperature crash could trigger a flash freeze, causing any wet or untreated roads to ice over quickly.

The National Weather Service notes a 40 to 70 percent chance of snow showers Thursday afternoon and evening, with gusty winds and rapidly changing conditions. There is medium confidence that snow squalls may develop as precipitation changes to all snow, leading to brief but intense snowfall and reduced visibility.

Temperatures are expected to fall below freezing from west to east Thursday afternoon and evening. The most hazardous travel conditions are likely during the Thursday evening commute, when rapidly freezing roads and gusty winds may combine.

Snow is expected to taper off Thursday night, with limited additional accumulation. Winds may increase overnight, keeping roads slick in untreated areas.

The evolving conditions may especially impact commuters, delivery drivers, and evening travelers across northeast Wisconsin.
