Green Bay, Wis. – Southerly winds will strengthen Sunday, with gusts reaching 30 to 35 mph across northeast and central Wisconsin. The National Weather Service in Green Bay warns that these conditions, combined with near-record warmth and dry fuels, could lead to elevated fire weather in rural areas. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and avoid burning activities through the afternoon.
According to the NWS Green Bay office, the strongest winds are expected between noon and 5 p.m. Sunday, affecting areas along U.S. 41, I-43, and I-39 corridors from Green Bay to Wausau and Marshfield. Winds will gradually ease after sunset but remain breezy into the evening. Officials say open fields, recently harvested farmland, and grassy areas are particularly vulnerable to fast-spreading fires under these conditions.
Fire management agencies and county emergency teams across Shawano, Oconto, and Marathon Counties are advising residents to delay any brush or leaf burning until at least Monday. “Even small sparks can spread quickly under gusty, dry weather,” officials noted in a Saturday update.
Motorists should use caution on north–south routes where crosswinds could affect high-profile vehicles. Outdoor events may need to secure tents and decorations.
Residents are encouraged to keep vehicles off dry grass, hydrate outdoor pets, and remain weather-aware as temperatures approach record highs near 80°F before a cooler start to the week.
