Green Bay, Wisconsin – An ongoing wintry mix of freezing drizzle, light snow, and fog is creating icy and slippery travel conditions across parts of northeast and north-central Wisconsin Friday morning, according to forecasters.
The National Weather Service in Green Bay reports that precipitation will continue through the morning hours, with the greatest travel impacts expected during the early commute period. Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect, with icy conditions forecast to persist through 9 a.m. in some areas and through noon farther north.
Forecasters say freezing drizzle is the primary concern, as even light amounts can quickly glaze roads, bridges, and sidewalks. Areas under advisory include portions of north-central and far northern Wisconsin, including communities near Rhinelander, Medford, Wausau, Iron Mountain, and Menominee.
The Weather Service notes that precipitation coverage should gradually taper off by late morning to early afternoon, transitioning to drizzle or ending altogether. However, lingering ice may continue to affect untreated surfaces even after precipitation ends.
Visibility may be reduced at times due to fog and light precipitation, especially during the morning hours. Motorists are urged to reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance, and use headlights to improve visibility for other drivers.
Post-holiday commuters are encouraged to allow extra travel time and remain alert for rapidly changing road conditions, particularly on elevated surfaces such as overpasses and ramps. Pedestrians should also use caution, as sidewalks and steps may be slick and difficult to see.
No significant snow accumulation is expected, but forecasters emphasize that freezing drizzle can be more dangerous than snow due to its ability to create near-invisible ice.
The National Weather Service advises checking the latest road conditions before traveling and continuing to monitor forecasts as advisories remain in effect through the morning hours.
