Dangerous cold conditions are expected to intensify across northeast Wisconsin tonight as temperatures fall below zero and wind chills plunge to 10 to 20 degrees below zero for much of New Year’s Eve night, according to the National Weather Service in Green Bay.
NWS officials report that temperatures will drop rapidly this evening behind an arctic front, with most locations falling below zero overnight. Forecast minimum temperatures show readings near −4 to −8 degrees in northern communities such as Rhinelander, Crandon, and Eagle River, while Green Bay, Appleton, and Oshkosh fall into the single digits below zero by early New Year’s Day.
Wind chill values are expected to be even more hazardous. According to the National Weather Service, wind chills ranging from −10 to −20 degrees are likely for most of the night, creating conditions where frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
Cold impacts will be felt across major travel corridors including U.S. Highway 41, State Highway 29, Highway 32, and Highway 57. While no snowfall is expected to significantly impact roads, the extreme cold can affect vehicles, increase the risk of stalled engines, and worsen conditions for anyone stranded outdoors.
Cities including Green Bay, Wausau, Marinette, Shawano, and Manitowoc are all expected to experience subzero wind chills during peak overnight hours. Rural and northern locations may feel the cold most intensely due to lighter shelter from wind.
The National Weather Service urges residents to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers, cover exposed skin, and ensure pets are brought indoors overnight. Drivers should carry emergency supplies, including blankets and fully charged phones, when traveling late tonight or early Thursday.
Conditions will remain very cold into New Year’s Day morning, before slowly moderating later Thursday afternoon.
For overnight workers, first responders, and New Year’s Eve celebrations, extreme cold—not snow—poses the primary safety risk as 2026 begins.
