Light snow moving along an arctic front is expected to affect northeast Wisconsin today and tonight, bringing minimal accumulation but colder, breezy conditions for New Year’s Eve, according to the National Weather Service in Green Bay.
NWS officials report that light snow will spread across the region today, with snowfall totals ranging from a dusting to around one-half inch for most locations. Northern Vilas County could see closer to 1 inch of accumulation, though impacts are expected to remain limited.
According to the National Weather Service, little to no road impacts are anticipated, as snowfall rates remain light. However, breezy northwest winds behind the arctic front will cause temperatures to feel near zero degrees at times, especially during the evening and overnight hours.
Forecast maps show New Year’s Eve temperatures hovering in the upper teens to lower 20s, including around 21 degrees in Green Bay, 20 in Sturgeon Bay, 19 in Wausaukee, and 14 to 15 degrees in Rhinelander and Florence. Winds will add an extra chill for those attending outdoor celebrations.
Road conditions along U.S. Highway 41, State Highway 29, Highway 32, and Highway 57 are expected to remain mostly manageable, though drivers should remain alert for brief slick spots during passing snow showers, particularly in northern areas.
Snow chances taper off late tonight into early New Year’s Day (Thursday), with cold but quiet conditions expected to start 2026. No additional accumulation is forecast after the arctic front exits the area.
The National Weather Service advises residents to dress warmly for outdoor New Year’s Eve plans and to use caution while driving, especially in rural and northern locations where snow cover may be slightly higher.
For commuters, service workers, and holiday travelers, the primary concern will be cold wind chills rather than significant snowfall, making this a relatively low-impact winter weather event.
