Green Bay, Wis. – Strong currents and 5-foot waves are creating dangerous conditions along Lake Michigan beaches through 7 p.m. Monday, prompting officials to issue a Beach Hazard Statement and Small Craft Advisory from Green Bay to Milwaukee.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, southwest winds between 10 and 20 knots—with gusts up to 25 knots—are driving hazardous waves into the shoreline. The Beach Hazard Statement warns swimmers of strong rip currents and high waves that could sweep people off piers or pull them into deeper water.
Coastal communities including Sturgeon Bay, Manitowoc, Sheboygan, and Port Washington are all under advisory. Mariners are urged to remain in port or seek safe harbor, as wave heights are reaching 2 to 5 feet on the lake and bay. Smaller vessels are especially at risk, and local emergency officials recommend avoiding non-essential boating until waters calm.
Storms are expected to develop across eastern Wisconsin this afternoon and evening, which could prolong hazardous lake conditions. Beachgoers should avoid entering the water and keep children and pets away from the surf zone.
Warnings remain in effect through 7 p.m. Monday, with improving conditions expected by late evening.
