Green Bay, WI – Wisconsin residents may catch a rare September spectacle tonight as the Northern Lights could glow across state skies. Drivers face a very different challenge, with dense fog lowering visibility below a quarter mile along stretches of I-43 and Highway 41 before sunrise Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, patchy fog will redevelop overnight and again Tuesday night, creating hazardous travel conditions. Commuters should allow extra time, slow down, and use low beams on rural highways and bridges where visibility drops sharply.

NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center reports that a coronal mass ejection from the sun is expected to trigger geomagnetic storm activity through Tuesday morning. Clear skies may allow aurora viewing across Wisconsin, with the best chance north of Green Bay into Door, Marinette, and Oconto counties.

Tuesday brings sunshine and highs near 77, though clouds will increase late. By Tuesday night into Wednesday, scattered thunderstorms are possible, with an 80% chance of showers Wednesday afternoon. Some storms could bring brief downpours and gusty winds, but severe weather is not expected.

As meteorological fall begins, the combination of rare auroras, dense fog, and midweek showers highlights an active start to September in Wisconsin. More advisories could follow as midweek rain develops.
