Downers Grove, Ill. — On Monday, June 16, the Downers Grove Grade School District 58 recognized Brian Barnas for receiving a Green Apple Award. Barnas is an English Language Arts teacher at Herrick Middle School.

“We appreciate your service and dedication and hope you’re having a great summer!” the district posted on Facebook.

The Green Apple Award is an award given to District 58 staff members. The Education Foundation of Downers Grove invites residents to nominate a staff member with the award. Donations are made to the foundation in the name of the teacher or staff member selected.

When a donation is received, the Education Foundation sends a Green Apple award card to the recipient. The cards are specially designed with a custom message from the donor. Recipients are celebrated on the school’s social media pages and honored throughout the year. The Superintendent or school principal makes monthly rounds to the teachers or staff members in which donations are made to present the card. The Green Apple Award is one of four programs and events organized by the Education Foundation.

In 2019, Barnas received a Green Apple Award as well as a Distinguished Service Award nomination, which is also organized by the Education Foundation of Downers Grove.
