South Bend, Indiana – Millions across the Midwest and Great Lakes are bracing for oppressive heat through Sunday, with heat index values climbing to 100°F during the July 4 holiday weekend.
According to the National Weather Service and the Weather Prediction Center, a Moderate to Major heat risk is in place from Friday, July 4, through Sunday, July 6, spanning major cities including Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, and Indianapolis. Affected areas should expect heat index values between 90°F and 100°F, particularly during the afternoon hours.
In northern Indiana, including Fort Wayne and South Bend, the heat will peak midday Saturday and Sunday. Officials urge residents to stay indoors during peak heat, hydrate frequently, and avoid strenuous activity. Never leave children or pets in vehicles, even for short periods.
The heat risk extends south to Louisville and St. Louis, and as far north as the Twin Cities, impacting travel, outdoor events, and vulnerable populations. Local cooling centers may open if temperatures remain elevated.
Warnings will stay in effect through the weekend. More advisories could be issued if temperatures rise beyond expectations.
