Renton, WA – Authorities say a coordinated investigation has led to the arrest of three suspects allegedly tied to a sophisticated vehicle theft ring operating in the region.
According to the Grays Harbor Sheriffโs Office, the investigation began last month after a Grays Harbor County resident reported a suspicious encounter tied to a Facebook Marketplace vehicle sale. Detectives said the victim was allegedly targeted by individuals who arranged to purchase the vehicle, only to allegedly stage a mechanical issue during the meeting. Investigators said one suspect allegedly distracted the victim while another sprayed oil on the engine and tailpipe, falsely claiming catastrophic failure in an attempt to negotiate a lower price.
Officials said the victim grew suspicious, refused to complete the sale, and documented the suspectsโ license plate before alerting authorities. Detectives later allegedly connected the same vehicle to a similar incident involving another victim who reportedly sold their car at a reduced price under comparable circumstances.
Following additional investigation, authorities allegedly identified multiple victims and three suspects believed to be associated with the operation. Detectives also located a residence in Renton linked to the suspects.
On Tuesday, with assistance from Aberdeen and Hoquiam police, investigators served a search warrant and arrested all three individuals. During the search, officials reportedly recovered several vehicles believed to have been used in the scheme, along with approximately $57,000 in cash, more than 20 vehicle titles, and multiple sets of keys. Six vehicles found at the property were seized as evidence.
Authorities said the suspects are Romanian nationals and are allegedly part of a larger organized criminal network. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be forthcoming.
Officials urge anyone who believes they may have been targeted to contact Detective Ed Welter.
