Hanford, CA – Drivers on Interstate 5 over the Grapevine should prepare for slick pavement as early as Monday evening as snow levels drop toward Tejon Pass.

According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Monday afternoon through Thursday morning for the Grapevine area, including Lebec. Snow levels are expected to fall below Tejon Pass by Tuesday, bringing the potential for 1 to 2 inches of light, wet snow. Wind gusts could reach 40 mph, adding to hazardous driving conditions on exposed stretches of I-5.

While snowfall totals remain relatively light, even minor accumulation can create dangerous travel across the steep grades and elevated roadways of Tejon Pass. The greatest impacts may occur during the Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes, when temperatures are cold enough for snow to stick.

Caltrans could implement chain controls if snow begins to accumulate. Drivers should slow down, increase following distance and monitor road conditions before departure. Travelers can check the latest highway updates by calling 511.

Conditions may fluctuate through midweek, and updates are likely as the timing and snow levels become clearer ahead of Tuesday.
