Moses Lake, WA – Five Grant County deputies opened fire during a confrontation inside a rural barn Monday, leaving a 33-year-old man dead.

The Central Basin Investigative Team (CBIT) confirmed Tuesday that it is leading the independent investigation into the February 16 officer-involved shooting in the 4700 block of Road L.9. The man killed was identified as Aaron Ammann, 33.

According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and Moses Lake police officers were at the property regarding an ongoing investigation when they encountered Ammann walking around the grounds. Officers searched outbuildings and vehicles before locating him inside a small barn armed with a rifle.

Authorities stated Ammann exited the barn with the rifle allegedly leveled toward officers. Five deputies discharged their service weapons. No Moses Lake police officers fired.

Law enforcement officers and emergency medical personnel rendered aid immediately, but Ammann was pronounced dead at the scene.

Under Washington’s Law Enforcement Training and Community Safety Act, any use of deadly force resulting in death requires a fully independent criminal investigation. CBIT investigators from multiple regional agencies are handling the case. None of the investigating agencies were involved in the shooting.

Two civilian community members will receive regular updates as required by law, and a family liaison has been assigned to Ammann’s relatives. Weekly public updates are mandated for transparency.

The investigation remains ongoing.
