Marion, IN – A 45-year-old Marion woman was killed and another driver seriously injured Wednesday afternoon following a head-on collision on State Road 18 near Oak Hill High School in Grant County.
According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at approximately 4:14 p.m. to reports of a two-vehicle crash near the intersection of State Road 18 and State Road 13 in Converse. Investigators said a 2014 black BMW traveling westbound on SR-18 crossed the centerline and struck a 2023 white Chevrolet head-on.
One driver was pulled from her burning vehicle by bystanders before being airlifted by medical helicopter to a Fort Wayne hospital with serious injuries. The other driver, a 45-year-old woman, was trapped inside her vehicle and later transported to Marion Health, where she died. Her identity is being withheld pending notification of family.
Multiple witnesses reported the BMW was being driven erratically just before the crash, investigators said. The Grant County Sheriff’s Crash Team continues to investigate the incident, noting details may change as more evidence is gathered.
Sheriff Del Garcia extended condolences to the family of the victim and thanked first responders from Swayzee and Sweetser Police and Fire Departments, Pleasant Township Fire, Marion Health Medics, and Grant County EMS for their assistance.
