Marion, IN – The Grant County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to stay alert for a growing wave of misleading online advertisements that trick consumers into losing money on fake products and offers.
According to the department, scammers are using social media, email, and websites to promote fraudulent deals that appear legitimate but lead to financial loss. Common tactics include fake lottery winnings, bait advertising, false celebrity endorsements, and hidden fees or product switches once a purchase is made.
“Not every scam looks obvious at first,” the Sheriff’s Office said in its alert. “These ads often use flashy language or exaggerated claims to make products sound better than they are.”
To stay safe, officials urge consumers to research companies before buying, verify reviews, and avoid offers that seem “too good to be true.” Suspicious ads should be reported to consumer protection agencies.
Hundreds of Hoosiers fall victim to misleading ad scams every year, losing money or personal information in the process. The Sheriff’s Office advises residents to stay cautious, ask questions, and never rely solely on social media promotions when making purchases.
