Grand Rapids, Mich. – Swimmers and boaters along the Lake Michigan shoreline are urged to stay out of the water this weekend as dangerous waves and strong currents continue from South Haven north to Manistee. The National Weather Service warns that wave heights of 6 to 10 feet on Friday will gradually lessen to 3 to 6 feet Saturday and Sunday, but the risk of rip currents will remain high.
According to the National Weather Service office in Grand Rapids, winds up to 35 mph are driving the rough surf Friday, with gusts easing to 25 mph by Saturday. Despite the slight drop in wave size, red-flag swim conditions will persist through Sunday afternoon, meaning the water remains unsafe.
Communities most at risk include Holland, Muskegon, Ludington, and South Haven, where beachgoers are advised to avoid swimming altogether. Strong currents could sweep even experienced swimmers away from shore, and first responders caution that rescues become increasingly dangerous in these conditions.
Officials recommend avoiding non-essential water activity, keeping children away from piers, and staying informed through local updates. Conditions are expected to improve gradually early next week, but warnings remain in effect through Sunday.
