Grand Rapids, MI – Strong thunderstorms are expected to impact Michigan tonight, bringing damaging winds, hail, and a potential tornado risk to parts of the state.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Grand Rapids, wind gusts of 45 to 55 mph are forecast throughout the day, with storms potentially producing gusts up to 60 mph between 8 p.m. and 3 a.m. on Sunday. Areas across western and central Michigan, including Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Lansing, are under an elevated severe weather threat.

The NWS warns that damaging winds exceeding 60 mph could cause power outages and tree damage. There is also a slight risk of large hail, which may lead to property damage. While the tornado risk remains low, isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor objects, stay indoors during storms, and have a way to receive weather alerts overnight. Drivers should exercise caution due to strong crosswinds and possible debris on roads.

The storm system is expected to clear by early Sunday morning, with calmer conditions returning later in the day. Stay updated with local forecasts and emergency alerts as conditions develop.
