Grand Rapids, MI – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for West Michigan counties along Lake Michigan through 4 a.m. Tuesday, as lake effect snow continues to impact evening and overnight travel, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids.

The advisory includes Muskegon, Ottawa, Allegan, and Van Buren Counties, with total snow accumulations between 2 and 5 inches and locally higher amounts possible in heavier snow bands.

Forecasters warn that visibility and road conditions may change rapidly over short distances due to shifting lake effect bands. The Monday evening commute is expected to be most affected, especially along US-31 and I-196, where snow squalls could briefly reduce visibility to near zero.

Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and check updated road reports before traveling. The NWS notes that conditions should gradually improve after sunrise Tuesday as winds weaken and lake effect bands drift offshore.

Residents are also reminded that localized totals could exceed forecasts, depending on where the heaviest snow bands settle overnight.
