Grand Rapids, MI – Drivers across western Michigan should brace for several inches of snow beginning early Saturday, with the heaviest snowfall expected Saturday night into Sunday. Travel along major highways like US-131, I-94, I-96, and I-196 could become hazardous as roads turn snow-covered and visibility drops significantly.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, chances for 6 inches or more are highest near Muskegon (76%), Grand Rapids (79%), and Kalamazoo (83%). The storm’s path remains uncertain, and any shift could impact where the heaviest snow sets up. Flint and Detroit are expected to see lighter accumulations but still face slick travel conditions.

Key stretches of road including M-6, M-37, and even I-69 near Lansing may see periods of heavy snow and reduced visibility Saturday evening into early Sunday morning. Motorists traveling post-Thanksgiving should plan for extra time, especially across higher-probability zones like St. Joseph (91%) and Kalamazoo.

Road agencies urge drivers to avoid non-essential travel during peak snowfall and keep emergency kits and fully charged devices on hand.

Snowfall rates are expected to taper by midday Sunday, but secondary roads may remain slick. Additional advisories may be issued as the storm path becomes clearer.
