Grand Rapids, MI – Thick clouds roll in from Lake Michigan this morning, carrying bands of heavy lake-effect snow that will make travel difficult from Holland to Ludington and inland toward Grand Rapids. Temperatures in the low 20s and steady lake winds are setting up a slippery start to the first week of December.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, localized bursts of snow could drop 1 to 3 inches by Tuesday morning, with heavier totals along the immediate lakeshore. Visibility may drop below half a mile at times, especially on open stretches of US-31, I-96, and M-231.

Even short commutes could become challenging as snow showers reduce visibility and coat roadways with a thin, icy layer. Bridges, ramps, and rural routes will freeze first as temperatures fall back to around 20°F tonight. The weather service warns that slick travel conditions may persist into early Tuesday before snow showers taper off.

By Tuesday afternoon, skies briefly brighten and highs reach 31°F, but another wave of snow and mixed precipitation is expected by Wednesday. Thursday brings a short-lived break with sunshine and highs in the low 20s before another chance of snow returns Friday.

5-Day Outlook (Grand Rapids, MI):

  • Tuesday: Partly sunny, high 31°F.
  • Wednesday: Snow showers likely, high 34°F.
  • Thursday: Partly sunny, high 22°F.
  • Friday: Snow showers, high 27°F.
  • Saturday: Chance of snow, high 30°F.
