Gray skies stretch across West Michigan this morning, and the air feels heavy with moisture. The state is staring down another round of winter weather — a wintry mix that could make travel tricky from Tuesday night through midweek.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a mix of snow, light freezing drizzle, and rain will move through southwest and central Lower Michigan by Tuesday afternoon. Temperatures near freezing will make it tough for roadways to dry, creating slick spots on untreated surfaces, particularly north of I-96 and along secondary roads.
By Wednesday morning, precipitation transitions mainly to snow. Up to a few inches may accumulate across inland counties, with lighter totals along the lakeshore where precipitation may briefly mix with rain. Drivers should expect reduced visibility and slick conditions through Wednesday evening. Gusty northwest winds could also cause localized drifting, especially in open or rural areas.
The pattern remains unsettled through the weekend. Additional rounds of light snow are likely Thursday night into Saturday as cold air deepens. Highs will hover near freezing before falling into the teens by Friday night, with wind chills dipping into the single digits.
Meteorologists say lake-effect snow may redevelop by late week as temperatures continue to fall, bringing slippery conditions back to western Michigan.
