Grand Rapids, MI – A pale gray sky and misty chill set the tone across West Michigan this morning as early winter settles in. Drivers can already see the shimmer of thin ice forming along bridges and untreated side roads — a reminder that winter driving season has officially begun.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a light freezing drizzle may continue through sunrise, followed by renewed snow chances late tonight. Temperatures hover near 29°F, and untreated roads could turn slick again by evening, especially along and south of I-96.

Meteorologists say light snow will persist into Sunday, mixing with gusty winds that may briefly lower visibility. By Monday morning, patchy snow showers are expected to impact the commute, creating slowdowns for early drivers. None of the systems are expected to bring heavy accumulation — around an inch at most — but the timing and cold pavement may still make travel hazardous.

Residents should plan extra time for errands or Sunday trips and keep salt or sand handy for driveways and sidewalks. With daytime highs struggling to reach the mid-30s and lows dipping into the teens, any melted precipitation may refreeze overnight — a setup for “black ice” risks through early next week.

Looking Ahead:

  • Sunday: Light snow, breezy, highs near 28°F.
  • Monday: Partly sunny, colder, high 23°F.
  • Tuesday: Snow showers likely, high 35°F.
  • Wednesday–Thursday: On-and-off flurries, highs in the upper 20s to low 30s.
