GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Flurries dance across streetlights this morning as a crisp 16° wind sweeps through west Michigan. The air is sharp, the ground powder-coated, and visibility dips below a mile in spots where lake-effect bands drift inland. Winter’s return is fully underway across the Lower Peninsula.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a Hazardous Weather Outlook remains in effect for southwest Michigan. Light to moderate snow is expected through the morning, especially north of Holland and along the lakeshore. A few heavier bursts could briefly cover roads and lower visibility, creating slick conditions for early commuters.
Road crews are treating bridges and overpasses, but with temperatures locked below freezing, any untreated surfaces could glaze quickly. Drivers along US-131 and I-196 should allow extra time and reduce speed through midday.
Meteorologists say another system Wednesday could drop an additional half-inch to an inch of snow, mainly west of US-127, before high pressure brings a drier, colder stretch to end the week. Wind chills are expected to fall into the single digits by Thursday morning as Arctic air tightens its grip.
