Grand Rapids, MI – Intense lake-effect snow and strong winds will continue to create dangerous whiteout conditions across West Michigan into Thanksgiving Day, with rapid visibility drops and snow-covered roads making travel treacherous from Ludington to Battle Creek. Wind gusts up to 45 mph are lofting powder back onto plowed lanes, prolonging hazardous conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect until 7 p.m. Weather Today – Thanksgiving Day 2025 for Mason, Lake, Oceana, Osceola, Newaygo, Mecosta, Allegan, Barry, Kalamazoo, and Calhoun Counties. Forecasters expect another 2 to 4 inches north of Grand Rapids and 1 to 3 inches from Holland to Battle Creek. According to meteorologists, visibility may fall below one-quarter mile during stronger bursts as snow continues to blow across US-131, I-96, I-196, and M-37. According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, whiteouts may occur suddenly where lake-effect bands pivot inland.
Bands remain highly variable, shifting from clear air to intense snowfall within minutes. Drivers between Big Rapids, Grand Rapids, South Haven, and Kalamazoo should expect abrupt traction changes, especially over bridges and open farm country where drifting worsens.
Residents traveling for the holiday should delay departures when possible. Keep emergency kits—flashlights, food, and water—in vehicles, winterize cars, and charge devices ahead of any outages. Those who must drive should reduce speed, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking as winds remain strong through the morning hours.
Conditions gradually improve late Weather Today – Thanksgiving Day 2025 as winds weaken and bands begin to break apart.
