GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A strong fall storm will sweep across western Michigan this weekend, bringing widespread showers, gusty winds, and possible ponding on local roads by Sunday. Travelers along I-96 and I-196 should prepare for reduced visibility, slick pavement, and brief flooding in low-lying areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, thunderstorms are possible Saturday afternoon into early Sunday as the storm system crosses the Great Lakes. While severe weather is not expected, rain could exceed an inch in some spots. Gusts topping 40 mph may make driving difficult for high-profile vehicles, especially near the lakeshore.

The storm will push cooler, drier air into the region by Monday, ending the wet stretch and setting up a crisp, sunny start to the week. Those with outdoor weekend plans — including fall festivals and pumpkin patch outings — should pack rain gear and secure loose decorations. Power flickers are possible Sunday afternoon as winds strengthen.

NWS forecasters say the strongest rainfall will fall Saturday night into Sunday morning before tapering by late day. Temperatures will hold near 70°F Saturday but drop sharply into the 50s Sunday as the front passes.

Residents are urged to monitor local alerts and avoid flooded roads. Conditions will improve Monday, bringing a brief taste of calmer fall weather before another round of showers returns midweek.
