Grand Rapids, Michigan – Snow and strong winds will continue to impact much of west and central Michigan on Monday, creating hazardous travel conditions through the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. EST Monday for Mecosta, Montcalm, Kent, Ionia, Barry, Eaton, and Calhoun Counties. The advisory covers portions of central, south-central, and southwest Michigan, including Grand Rapids, Big Rapids, Greenville, Ionia, Hastings, Charlotte, and Battle Creek.
Forecasters expect additional snowfall of 2 to 4 inches, with wind gusts reaching up to 60 miles per hour. While snowfall totals are moderate, the combination of snow and strong winds may lead to blowing snow, reduced visibility, and slick road surfaces, particularly on open roadways and bridges.
The National Weather Service warns that hazardous conditions could impact both the Monday morning and evening commutes, as snow-covered roads and gusty winds make travel more difficult. Untreated roads may become especially slippery during periods of heavier snow or blowing snow.
In addition to travel concerns, strong winds could cause isolated tree damage, potentially resulting in downed branches and brief power interruptions. Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items and remain alert for debris on roadways.
Motorists are advised to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time, especially during peak commute hours. Pedestrians should also use caution on sidewalks and steps, which may become icy and slick as snow accumulates.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Monday evening as winds begin to ease and snow tapers off. Until then, officials urge residents across west and central Michigan to remain weather-aware and take precautions when traveling.
