Grand Rapids, Michigan – Dangerous travel conditions are unfolding across western Michigan today as intense lake effect snow bands and powerful winds create whiteouts on major roads near Grand Rapids. Authorities are urging drivers to avoid travel near and west of U.S. 131 as conditions rapidly deteriorate through the morning and into the afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, lake effect snow combined with gusty winds is producing near-zero visibility at times, with whiteouts already observed on MDOT traffic cameras. Winds are steadily increasing, with gusts reaching 35 to 40 mph, lofting dry, powdery snow and quickly covering previously treated roads. Several inches of new snow are expected through the day.

The most hazardous stretch for travel is expected from this morning through the afternoon, particularly along the U.S. 131 corridor and west toward the Lake Michigan shoreline. Key routes including I-96, I-196, and surrounding county roads are seeing rapidly changing conditions, with drifting snow and sudden visibility drops making driving treacherous. Emergency officials recommend postponing travel if possible and carrying an emergency kit if travel cannot be avoided.

Snow showers may continue into tonight, even as winds slowly ease. Travel conditions could remain hazardous, especially in lakeshore communities and areas west of Grand Rapids. Additional advisories may remain in effect as conditions evolve throughout the day.
