Grand Rapids, Michigan – Light snow is expected to create slippery road conditions across the Grand Rapids area today and again Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids reports that light snow showers may develop this afternoon and evening, potentially affecting travel across southwest Lower Michigan. While snowfall amounts are expected to remain light, untreated roads and bridges could become slick during peak commute times.
Early Tuesday morning conditions at Gerald R. Ford International Airport showed temperatures near 21°F, with wind chills around 7°F. Northwest winds of 10 to 15 mph, with higher gusts, are contributing to cold and uncomfortable conditions for those outdoors.
Snow chances increase Tuesday afternoon, with snow becoming likely by late afternoon and evening. Forecast guidance indicates around 1 inch of new snow may accumulate overnight into Tuesday night. Snow is expected to taper off early Wednesday morning before another round of light snow develops Wednesday afternoon and evening.
High temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to reach around 26°F, with overnight lows dropping into the low teens, especially Wednesday night. Wind chills will remain near or below 10°F at times, increasing the risk of cold exposure.
New Year’s Day is expected to be dry and cold, with partly sunny skies and highs near 22°F. Below-normal temperatures are forecast to persist through the end of the week, with highs remaining in the 20s.
Spotter activation is not expected, and no winter storm warnings are currently in effect. However, the National Weather Service urges motorists to use caution during periods of snowfall.
Commuters, students, and early-shift workers should allow extra travel time and be prepared for slick conditions, especially during afternoon and evening hours today and Wednesday.
