Grand Rapids, Michigan – Drivers across Lower Michigan could hit pockets of large hail and blinding rain between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. Tuesday as overnight storms peak right during the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, storms will develop after 11 p.m. Monday and track east through 8 a.m. Tuesday. Most storms remain elevated, but stronger cells carry a 20% to 40% chance of large hail, with damaging wind and tornado risks staying below 20%.

The highest impacts stretch from Benton Harbor through Grand Rapids, Lansing, and into Flint and Detroit. Key corridors including I-96, US-131, and I-94 could see sudden visibility drops below one mile in heavier downpours. Hail up to 1 inch may dent vehicles and create hazardous road conditions, especially on bridges and elevated ramps.

Utility crews are not expecting widespread outages, but isolated power flickers are possible where stronger cells track. Morning school buses and early commuters face the greatest risk window.

Charge devices overnight and allow extra travel time Tuesday morning. If hail begins, move indoors immediately and avoid parking under trees.

Storm chances taper after 8 a.m., but additional advisories may be issued if stronger cells develop overnight.
