Grand Rapids, MI – Drivers across West Michigan are being urged to use caution this morning as patchy dense fog and below-freezing temperatures create potentially hazardous travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids.
Forecasters report that visibility may be sharply reduced in some areas due to the fog, particularly along rural roads and low-lying areas. In addition, temperatures have dipped below freezing, increasing the risk of icy spots on bridges and overpasses.
The weather service reminds motorists that bridges tend to freeze before roadways because they are exposed to cold air on all sides, allowing ice to form even when nearby pavement remains wet. Drivers are advised to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and avoid sudden braking or acceleration on icy surfaces.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve through the late morning as temperatures rise and fog begins to dissipate.
