Grand Rapids, MI – Residents across western and central Michigan are breathing hazardous air as wildfire smoke from Canada blankets the region, pushing pollution levels into the Unhealthy range through Tuesday evening.
According to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), all 83 counties are under an Air Quality Advisory as fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations climb due to trapped smoke under a high-pressure system. Brief periods may even reach the Red (Unhealthy) AQI level across cities like Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Lansing, and Muskegon.
Sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and those with respiratory conditions, are urged to avoid outdoor activities until air quality improves. Officials recommend closing windows overnight, using air purifiers or MERV-13 filters, and avoiding outdoor burning or residential wood stoves.
Relief is expected by Wednesday as shifting winds begin to clear the smoke from the region, but hot and sunny conditions will persist through the week.
