Grand Rapids, MI – Freezing drizzle and light snow are creating slippery conditions across portions of west and central Michigan this afternoon, prompting a Special Weather Statement from the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids. Officials warn that icy roads, sidewalks, and untreated surfaces may become hazardous through the early evening.
According to the National Weather Service, freezing drizzle—occasionally mixing with snow—is expected to continue through at least 3 p.m., with some areas potentially seeing conditions last as late as 6 p.m. Air and surface temperatures remain below freezing, increasing the likelihood of ice formation on roads, parking lots, and elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses.
The affected area includes multiple counties across the region, including Mecosta, Isabella, Montcalm, Gratiot, Ottawa, Kent, Ionia, Clinton, Allegan, Barry, Eaton, Van Buren, and Kalamazoo. Cities such as Grand Rapids, Holland, Mount Pleasant, Big Rapids, Hastings, and Kalamazoo may all experience slick travel conditions this afternoon.
Forecasters say even light amounts of freezing drizzle can quickly create icy patches, especially when temperatures stay below 32°F. Motorists are encouraged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time for travel as conditions may vary from town to town. Pedestrians should also use caution on sidewalks and parking lots where thin layers of ice may be difficult to see.
The freezing drizzle is expected to taper off later in the afternoon as temperatures slowly fall and precipitation diminishes. Drivers are urged to check local travel updates and remain weather-aware through the evening commute.
