Grand Rapids, Michigan – A widespread snow event is set to blanket much of western and central Michigan overnight, creating hazardous travel conditions during the Wednesday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from early Wednesday morning through midmorning for a large portion of the region. Snow is expected to develop after midnight, with steady accumulation continuing through about 10 a.m. Amounts will range from 2 to 5 inches across Kent, Ionia, Clinton, Montcalm, Isabella, Mecosta, and Gratiot counties, while heavier totals of 3 to 6 inches are likely farther west and south, including Allegan, Barry, Kalamazoo, Calhoun, Eaton, Ingham, and Jackson counties. Lake, Mason, and Newaygo counties could also see up to 6 inches.

Cities including Grand Rapids, Holland, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Lansing, Jackson, Ludington, Fremont, Big Rapids, and Mount Pleasant are expected to see snow-covered roads during peak travel hours. Untreated roads, bridges, and rural highways will be especially slick as snow rates increase before sunrise.

Drivers are urged to slow down, leave extra space between vehicles, and allow extra time for travel. Snow tapers off by late morning, but lingering slick spots may persist into the afternoon. Additional advisories could be issued if snowfall totals trend higher overnight.
