Grand Marais, MN – A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for Grand Marais and surrounding areas beginning late Wednesday night, with heavy snow, ice and strong winds expected to create hazardous travel conditions through Thursday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, areas of northern Cook County and Lake County could see widespread mixed precipitation, with snow totals ranging from 4 to 6 inches. Some localized areas, particularly near Lake Superior and higher terrain, could receive up to 7 or 8 inches by the time the system exits late Thursday night.

Forecasters also warn that light ice accumulations are possible, which could further complicate travel and increase the risk of power outages. Wind gusts may reach up to 40 mph, leading to blowing and drifting snow and reduced visibility. In heavier snow bands, visibility could briefly drop below one-quarter mile.

The watch area includes Grand Marais, Isabella, and surrounding communities, as well as the Grand Portage Reservation and portions of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The hazardous conditions are expected to impact both the Thursday morning and evening commutes.

A separate Winter Storm Watch is also in effect for parts of northern Minnesota, including Ely and International Falls, where snow totals of 3 to 5 inches are expected, with isolated spots reaching up to 6 inches. Wind gusts in those areas could approach 35 mph.

The National Weather Service advises residents to closely monitor forecast updates, as watches may be upgraded to warnings if confidence increases. Drivers are urged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and be prepared for rapidly changing road conditions.
