Duluth, MN – A fast-moving Clipper system will bring accumulating snow to the Northland beginning this evening, with the heaviest snowfall expected during the Tuesday morning commute along I-35, US-53, and MN-61.
The National Weather Service in Duluth reports snow will overspread northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin Monday evening, continuing through Tuesday before tapering off Tuesday evening as the system moves east. Snowfall rates are expected to peak Tuesday morning, especially along the North Shore and in southern Cook County, where rates could approach 1 inch per hour at times.
Storm totals will vary across the region. Inland areas including Brainerd, Aitkin, and International Falls may see lighter totals generally in the 1 to 3 inch range. However, higher elevations of southern Cook County, including Grand Marais and areas along the Gunflint Trail, could receive up to 8 inches of snow. Two Harbors and Silver Bay are also expected to see higher accumulations, particularly along MN-61.
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for portions of Cook County, where heavier snow and locally reduced visibility may significantly impact travel. Drivers along I-35 near Duluth and US-2 into northwest Wisconsin should prepare for snow-covered roads and reduced traction during the Tuesday morning commute.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve Tuesday evening as snowfall diminishes. However, untreated roads and bridges may remain slick into Tuesday night.
Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time, maintain safe following distances, and monitor updated forecasts as snowfall timing and intensity may vary across short distances.
