Grand Junction, Colo. – Thick wildfire smoke is blanketing Mesa County this evening, prompting an Air Quality Health Advisory that remains in effect until 9 a.m. Thursday.
According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, smoke from wildfires burning both within Colorado and in surrounding states is expected to impact Grand Junction, Gateway, and nearby areas through early Thursday. The advisory began at 6 p.m. Wednesday and covers the overnight hours when stagnant air can trap smoke near the surface.
Residents are urged to stay indoors, especially children, seniors, and those with heart or respiratory issues. Outdoor activity should be limited if smoke appears dense. If visibility drops below five miles, the smoke is considered unhealthy. Those experiencing symptoms such as coughing or difficulty breathing should seek cleaner air indoors or relocate temporarily.
Air quality is expected to improve after sunrise Thursday as wind patterns shift. However, additional advisories may be issued if fire activity continues or winds push smoke back into the region.
