Grand Junction, Colorado – Critical fire weather conditions are developing across lower elevations of Colorado, particularly along and south of I-70, with a Red Flag Warning in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday. Gusty winds and extremely low humidity are combining to create a high risk of wildfire ignition and rapid spread.

According to the US National Weather Service Grand Junction Colorado, minimum humidity levels will drop to between 6-11%. Wind gusts are expected to reach 30-40 mph during peak heating hours, with some stronger gusts possible in localized areas. These conditions significantly increase the danger of any new or existing fires.

Simultaneously, moisture moving ahead of a passing system will linger over the Colorado higher terrain, bringing a threat of isolated to widely scattered storms throughout the day. While these storms could bring some localized rain, the primary threat from them will be gusty winds and lightning, which could also spark new fires. Temperatures will remain slightly cooler but above normal across most of the region. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, discard cigarettes properly, and be extremely cautious with any activities that could generate sparks.

Warnings remain in effect through Thursday evening, and residents should monitor local news and emergency alerts for updates.
