Grand Junction, CO – Warm temperatures will dominate western Colorado today, but travelers heading into higher elevations should prepare for developing thunderstorms by mid to late afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, highs will reach into the upper 70s to low 80s across lower elevations, including Grand Junction, Moab, and Delta, with Grand Junction peaking near 81 degrees by late afternoon. Meanwhile, cooler air remains locked into the mountains, where highs stay in the 50s and 60s.

Storm development is expected after 2 p.m., primarily over the San Juan Mountains and central ranges, where scattered showers and thunderstorms could produce brief downpours and gusty winds. Areas near Telluride, Silverton, and Aspen face the highest chance for storm activity through the evening hours.

By tonight, temperatures will drop sharply, especially in higher terrain. Mountain towns could fall into the low 30s, including near freezing conditions around Vail and Steamboat Springs, while Grand Junction and surrounding valleys settle into the low 40s.

Drivers along I-70 and mountain passes should remain alert for rapidly changing conditions late in the day. Warmer, mostly dry weather continues into midweek, with additional updates possible if storm coverage expands.
